Fabric8Labs, headquartered in sunny San Diego, CA, is revolutionizing advanced manufacturing with next-generation 3D printing technology. We're looking for a Junior Electrical Engineer to join our Electronical Hardware team as we scale our patented Electrochemical Additive Manufacturing (ECAM) process for global production.

ECAM uses precise, room-temperature metal deposition to unlock geometries and applications that conventional metal AM can't reach. Since announcing our agreement to be acquired by TDK Corporation, we're rapidly expanding our team to advance this disruptive technology across a wide range of electronics components—including data center infrastructure, wireless communications, and power electronics.

As a Junior Electrical Engineer, you'll support the design of mixed-signal circuits and printed circuit boards for our ECAM printheads — contributing to schematic capture, PCB layout, board bring-up, and embedded firmware under the guidance of senior engineers, with growing ownership as you develop.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout in Altium Designer (or a similar tool) for mixed-signal boards, following design rules for signal integrity, power distribution, and grounding.
  • Contribute to the design of mixed-signal circuits — analog front ends, sensing and driver stages, and their interfaces to microcontrollers, ADCs, and DACs.
  • Develop and flash embedded firmware for microcontrollers such as the RP2040 to exercise, validate, and automate testing of new hardware.
  • Build up, bring up, and debug prototype hardware in the lab; run basic characterization and document results against requirements.
  • Perform component selection, generate BOMs, and prepare fabrication and assembly packages, partnering with manufacturing and suppliers.
  • Support design reviews and documentation, and collaborate across firmware, mechanical, and process engineering to integrate electronics into the printhead.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 0–3 years of experience — including internships, co-ops, or academic and personal projects — designing and debugging electronic hardware.
  • Foundational understanding of mixed-signal design: analog and digital circuits, op-amps, sensing, and basic power, and how they interact on a board.
  • Hands-on experience with PCB layout in Altium Designer or a comparable tool (e.g., KiCad, Cadence, Mentor).
  • Familiarity with embedded firmware development in C/C++ for microcontrollers such as the RP2040 or similar Arm Cortex-M parts.
  • Comfort with basic lab instrumentation — oscilloscopes, DMMs, and power supplies — for board bring-up and debugging.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and the ability to move quickly in a high-growth, ambiguous environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Firmware experience with the RP2040 (or similar microcontrollers), including peripherals such as SPI, I²C, UART, ADC, and PWM.
  • Exposure to low-noise or precision analog design, signal-chain design, or grounding and EMC practices.
  • Experience taking a board from schematic through fabrication, assembly, and bring-up — coursework, capstone, or personal projects count.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git), scripting (e.g., Python), or lab-automation tools.
  • Interest in electrochemistry, precision instrumentation, or precision manufacturing equipment.
